The General Medical Council has approved plans for the Faculty of Public Health, the Royal College of General Practitioners and NHS England to develop a dual accreditation programme for training in public health and general practice.
There are currently a number of professionals who have trained in both general practice and public health; either sequentially or by interdigitating the two programmes. The new dual accreditation allows for a more streamlined and effective programme for those who want to do both public health and general practice.
The first pilot cohort will start in August 2024, with recruitment for this cohort having started in autumn 2023. The new training programme will last for seven years in total.
Work is currently underway to learn from the first year of recruitment to the dual programme and further updates will be provided as this review progresses. Additional information on the programme is available from the NHS WTE medical hub.
