Working in conjunction with cross-sector partners, the UK Faculty of Public Health has published the third edition of Good Public Health Practice, updating the 2016 ‘Good Public Health Framework’ to outline the current required standards of practice for all registered public health professionals in the UK.
Developed in collaboration with stakeholders including the Department of Health and Social Care, the UK Health Security Agency, the Local Government Association, the UK Public Health Register, NHS England, and representatives from systems in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, this new guidance includes a renewed focus on behaviours and values to reflect the unique ethical domain of the public health profession.
The updated guidance in Good Public Health Practice, relevant to public health practitioners registered with the UK Public Health Register, General Medical Council, and General Dental Council, covers four key areas;
· Knowledge, skills and development
· Patients, partnership and communication
· Colleagues, culture and safety
· Trust and professionalism.
The guidance – delivered in-step with the General Medical Council’s ‘Good Medical Practice’ and intended to be implemented by organisations and individuals by 1 December 2024 – promotes and supports good public health practice, assisting public health professionals, colleagues, and employers to understand and assess what good public health practice looks like. It also provides a framework for public health professionals in planning their Continuing Professional Development and preparing for appraisals or revalidation.
The Faculty of Public Health thanks the stakeholder group involved in revisioning Good Public Health Practice, including representatives from across the UK public health system.
