Over the past few days, the country has seen a shocking wave of violence following the appalling attack on children in Southport. The rioting and disorder, fuelled by racism, Islamophobia and a toxic mix of far-right agitators and online disinformation, has no place in our society. The Faculty condemns the twisted narrative that lies behind this organised thuggery and goes against the enduring universal values of respect, unity and the richness of our diverse and vibrant communities. The Faculty published a number of years ago a statement on the role public health in violence prevention and more recently own anti-racism framework.
Many of our members will be deeply distressed by these events, and our primary concern is for the safety and wellbeing of everyone in the community and our members. The public health family should demonstrate, now more than ever, those values of fairness, community and togetherness and show we have no room for bigotry towards colleagues.
Please take care to look after yourselves, your loved ones and your community. We will continue to actively monitor the situation over the coming days.
