Inspiring Change – Scotland Public Health Conference: Recordings
Public Health Scotland, the Faculty of Public Health and the Scottish Directors of Public Health Group joined together to host a major Public Health Conference, which took place on 1 May 2024 in Glasgow.
This event brought together public health professionals, academics, policymakers, and colleagues from across the third sector, offering our public health family in Scotland an opportunity to join together in-person.
The Conference, themed “Inspiring Change”, included sessions on health inequalities, drug policy, climate change, political influencing, and many other important public health topics.
The recordings from the Inspiring Change – Scotland Public Health Conference are available below.
Katie Dee, FPH Board Member for Scotland and Chair of the Scottish Public Health Conference Planning Group welcoming delegates to the Conference.
FPH President Professor Kevin Fenton setting out the ambition of the Conference and the aim that its theme “Inspiring Change” reflects the leadership role of the Scottish public health community in tackling the big challenges we face today – climate change, infectious diseases, drug deaths, and health and social inequalities.
Public Health Scotland CEO Paul Johnston introducing Sir Michael Marmot, Professor of Epidemiology at University College London and Director of the UCL Institute of Health Equity. Professor Marmot presented findings from the Institute of Health Equity's latest report, which shows that regional and local health inequalities are widening, with local authorities across England struggling with reduced spending power.
Tim Allison, Director of Public Health at NHS Highland, introducing Dr Daniel Jolley, Assistant Professor of Social Psychology at the University of Nottingham, who reflected on conspiracy theories, why people believe them, how these influence health-related behaviours, and what approach public health professionals should have.
Dr Daniel Jolley was joined by an expert panel to discuss the importance of advocating based on evidence and building relationships of trust with communities:
- Professor Linda Bauld, Scottish Government’s Chief Social Policy Adviser
- Laura Young, Climate Activist
- Simon Capewell, Emeritus Professor, Department of Public Health at the University of Liverpool
